64-bit support

Postby mark_anderson_us » Thu Nov 05, 2009 8:05 am

Like many users who do a clean install of Win7, I took the opportunity to move to a 64-bit OS (need more than 2GB RAM).

When will 64-bit Outlokk 2010 be supported?

Mark:

Here's the official word on our blog:

We can’t officially support Office 2010 until it is completed and released by Microsoft. In the interim, our v5.0 beta (available very soon) will provide provisional support for the Office 2010 32bit Technical Preview. Future CC releases will follow to support the RTM of Office 2010, including the 64 bit version. I don’t have an estimate for a 64 bit beta at this time, but we are aware that this impacts a number of customers.

Vote me as another CC user without CC due to the 64 bit issue.

I grabbed the beta today and well, went 64 bit.

Happy to test when there is a 64 bit build available.

Same with me here, I have the 64 bit version of Outlook 2010 and I cannot wait to test it with Clearcontext.

Ditto. Sorry, but I won't be going back to 32-bit. So, for now at least, I guess ClearContext is a no-go for me. This is a pity, because I've been a happy ClearContext user for several years.

Can you tell us if you intend to implement 64-bit at all?

As we said above:

Thanks for your feedback.

Now that the worldwide Office 2010 beta is out, how about supporting the 64-bit version?

We expect 64-bit support to follow the Release-to-Manufacturing (RTM) version of Outlook 2010.

That's not good news. I am also using Outlook 2010 in 64bit and missing ClearContext.
Since Outlook release is still some time away, do you expect to release beta support for 64bit earlier?

Trying to work out how much to invest in tuning my process to fit some of the new features in Outlook.

Thanks,
Jane

Thanks so much for the feedback. Office 2010 64 bit beta testers are truly on the "bleeding edge" of software testing!

It is clear that there is a great deal of interest from our customers for 64 bit support. As we have said from the beginning, we will support the Office 2010 64 bit RTM release due out sometime next year. That said, 64 bit support will not be available in the initial v5.0 release. Once we get v5.0 out the door, we will investigate the steps required to convert to 64 bit and post our findings/timeline for support.

FYI - there are a couple of things that make 64 bit support harder than you might expect:

  • Office 2010 is in BETA, meaning that we are currently developing against a shifting target.
  • Many of the Microsoft development tools that we use have not been adapted for 64 bit support yet.

I suspect the above impacts every Office development shop, slowing 64 bit support for most add-ins.

I want to reiterate - we hear your requests loud and clear and we will support 64 bit Outlook 2010 just as soon as it is possible to do so! Thanks as always for your feedback.

Pays to read the fine print. I have been successfully using ClearContext on my Windows 7 64 bit for months with Outlook 2007. When I saw Office 2010, I upgraded to the beta. I didnt see that the 32 bit was the only one in the trial. I am now ClearContext poor for my Outlook.

If you looking for some Outlook 2010 64bit testing, I have done several beta tests. (even did an alpha test of Windows 97)

The sooner you have a beta, the better for me as I have come to rely on ClearContext but dont want to back rev Office now.

Thanks,

I am also using the 2010 beta 64 bit and can no longer use clear context. I would like to be notified when a beta is available for CC 64 Bit.
