MS security updates causing Outlook to crash

Postby ssholloway » Thu Aug 07, 2008 6:24 pm

Hello all--
It has taken me a long time to determine the cause of my Outlook crashes and I want to convey this information to others using CC because the crashes are not due to CC.
The MS security updates are KB946983 and KB952142. If you do a web search with either or both of these numbers, you will turn up quite a few hits about the problems they cause. Apparently KB946983 is not needed if you install Service Pack 1 although SP1 doesn't remove it. There is one thread where MS acknowledges KB952142 can cause crashes and says they plan on releasing an updated version, maybe this month.
In my case, Outlook would consistently crash if I tried to change the end date of an existing task by choosing a new date in the dropdown box. If I moved the task from one date to another in the task list or calendar, it worked fine. Removing the updates solved the problem.
There is at least one report that KB950282 also causes problems but I didn't have that one installed so I can't verify. You can tell what updates you have installed by checking the "show updates" box in the add/remove programs list. This will also allow you to uninstall the updates if you want. You can always download and reinstall the updates from the MS web site if uninstalling doesn't stabilize Outlook.
So before you take the drastic step of disabling CC, see what updates you have installed.
Regards,
--Sue
