Rename category & project file

How can a category and it's associate project file be renamed?

There isn't currently a comprehensive way to do this within the product. You can use the "Move Project" from the dashboard to do some of this.

To do so:
1) find the Project you want to rename in the Dashboard project list, and double click on it to open it in the detail tab. You may need to switch the Project view to "All Projects" from the default "Active" setting above the list to see your Project.
2) In the detail tab of the Project, click on the down arrow and select the "Move Project" function.

This function is mainly intended for Project Tasks and Appointments, and will rename and relabel those items. Mail items however will not be relabeled or moved from the old Project folder. New message will have the new Project label assigned when they arrive in your Inbox.

I just did this by renaming the mail folder first and then following the steps that you posted. Should I be concerned about potential side effects?

That should be fine. Having renamed the folder ahead of time shouldn't make a difference.
