Support for Office 2007

Postby hegerty » Wed May 24, 2006 6:25 pm

I know this is very early, but have you tested the current version of your product against Office 2007 (Outlook) and if so, are there issues?

If not, do you have a timeframe once Office 2007 has been released until you support the product? I'm currently using 2003 and found this site via a "Channel9" show about Office 12 and they mentioned this product.

Thanks.

Jim -

Thanks for your interest and getting in touch with us. We don't officially support Office 2007 at this time. That said, I know that there are several customers who are currently using ClearContext on Outlook 2007 with generally good results. Your mileage may vary.

I have been testing the product against 2007 in our labs and will be posting my findings on our weblog within a few days. In the meantime, please see this post for some detail on what we plan to do do with 2007.

If you decide to try us out on the new MS release, please let me know how it works out for you.

hegerty,

I have been using ClearContext on Outlook 2007 for quite a few betas now (of Outlook, that is) and have had no Clear Context-related problems. (Hopefully with the plug that Scoble gave ClearContext, there will be many more people like yourself finding this fantastic application!!)
My only issue is that, when writing an email, the ClearContext toolbar has been relegated to the "add-ins" tab, which means it's now a 2-click operation to assign a topic, but that is something that affects all Outlook/Word add-ins.
It's less of an issue when reading an email as the enhanced preview pane in Outlook, combined wit hthe fact that the ClearContext toolbars are visible, means I don't "open" an email to read it any more.

Keep up the great work!

SMHJ - thanks for the feedback!

FYI - I have posted the results of a quick 2007 test on our weblog. Next week I'll post additional detail on the features we plan to build into our Made for 2007 release.

We do, BTW, plan to implement ribbon support for 2007 which should eliminate the need to isolate our toolbars on the add-in tab.

FYI:

have been using Outlook 2007 with CC for a few days and one of the things that I'm seeing is that...after a while, even though CC is running, it stops interacting with the messages in the inbox. For example, I cant categorize or file topic.

The fix is to restart outlook.

Alexa -

Thanks for the feedback. Can you confirm that you are running ClearContext v2.0.4? Version number is listed on ClearContext > About.

If you're running v2.0.3 or earlier, an upgrade might help with this issue.

Thanks!

hi brad

yes, i'm running version 2.0.4

(just to clarify, i wasn't having this problem in outlook 2003 (well, occasionally CC would cause Outlook to die....but it was pretty rare) and it's just with 2007-Beta that i've seen this particulare problem.)

Thanks for the update Alexa. What OS are you running? Are you using any additional Add-ins or other programs/devices that access your mail file?

Hi, I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2.

I don't think I'm running any odd add-ins (there's a lot but most are from MS). I've e-mailed you a screen shot of my "Trust Center"

Tried ClearContext 2.0.5 with Outlook 2007 Beta on Vista Beta 2. And ClearContext is not registered as an Adding for Outlook 2007. Not sure why it doesn't work on Vista but something you might want to look into... And yeah, I know it's not a supported scenario... :)

You are correct that we're not supporting 2007. However, I did install CC v2.0.5 on Outlook 2007 yesterday successfully.

It could be the add-in became disabled during install. I'm not sure what the equivalent instructions are in 2007, but in previous versions, here's what you would do (from our FAQ):

http://www.clearcontext.com/faq.html#reenable

The ClearContext Add-in has become disabled (or is not loading), how do I re-enable?
If Outlook terminated during operation, the ClearContext add-in could be disabled. The first step is to restart Outlook and see if that fixes the problem. If this does not work, follow the instructions below to re-enable:

1. In Outlook 2003 and 2002 (XP), Select Help > About Microsoft Outlook > Disabled Items and select the checkbox next to add-in:clearmail.dll.
2. If this doesn't work, in all Outlook versions, Select Tools > Options > Other > Advanced Options... > COM Add-Ins... and ensure the box next to ClearContext is checked.

Please let me know if either of these help. Thanks.

I AM using CC with Outlook 2007 in XP SP2. No real issues there (except the slowness when filing a message). I am talking about using it in Vista Beta2.

I did already look into Addin dialog and CC isn't even listed there. I tried reinstalling it and that didn't help.

Another thing I tried was to run Outlook in evelated mode (Run as Administrator) and CC did show up in Addin manager as Inactive addin.

I also tried manally adding clearmail.dll and I got a message saying it's not a valid Office Add-in. I am suspecting that this has to do with security features of Vista.

Aahh - sorry, I mis-understood. I know that people are running CC v2 on Windows Vista and Outlook 2007, though I have not personally tested this exact setup (yet). I suspect that you are correct that there is some sort of security issue on your environment that we have yet to look into. Thanks for the heads up - I'm going to test in our labs and see what I can find, but I can't promise a near term answer. If you figure out a way around the problem, please let me know.

Thanks and have a great weekend.
